What a truly original and wonderful story...I just found it and I am hooked! Intelligent and well written. The world of fanfiction is such a vast wasteland I am thrilled to find this quality of work! Please keep writing!
Author's Response: Thank you for your kind reviews. The Budge book sounds interesting. There is a lot of great fanfiction, but it's hard to track it down, because there's just so much to wade through! I waited until I could come up with a reasonably original idea. I'm glad you're enjoying it!
Wonderful! Glad to see that Lily's making her way back into the real world. I can't wait to see what adventures may come in the next chapters.
Interesting. They are going to let Lilly finish her education. I like it. Update soon.
I've always believed that Snape was interested in Lily, whether she returned the interest or not. Your take on their relationship makes perfect sense to me. However, once things are explained to Harry, and he sees the friendship/whatever between them, things are going to get ugly.
(Is this going to be Harry/Hermione? It looks a little like you're going in that direction.)
I'm eagerly awaiting the next chapter.
Author's Response: Glad you're liking the story! No, the story won't really be H/Hr, though I've always thought that made more sense than Hr/R, which just makes me shudder. Most of the story will be people pining after someone they can't get. (Something like my own high school days!)
I started reading this when you first posted, but for some reason lost it??? Anyhow, I've found it and am very glad. It's a wonderful piece. I love your reference to Longbottom Leaf, ah stlll brings to mind Merry and Pippin. I love Lily in this story.
Really enjoying so far, original idea. Looking forward to finding where you take the story.
Wow! I mean wow! Did you have any source work for the incantation, all the Egyptian elements? The imagery was absolutely amazing. I tip my hat to you...update soon. I'm on the absolute edge of my seat.
Author's Response: I've been very remiss in not responding to your kind reviews. The source material for the spell came from the The Book of the Dead: The Hieroglyphic Transcript and English Translation of the Papyrus of Ani; edited by E.A Wallis Budge (not Fudge); Gramercy Books, 1996, (originally published 1890 and 1894). You might be able to get it through Amazon: I bought it at a museum.
I can easily see this Lily growing into the Lily we know from the books; passionate, intelligent, strong-minded and -willed. She and Hermione are certainly soul-sisters. I'm looking forward to the first meeting between Lily and Harry. I'd also like to see Hermione stick up for Harry a little more. She knows that Harry isn't the way Lily is describing James. I'm looking forward to the next chapter. (Is the chapter title indicative of what will happen? A judgement?)
Amazing! I love the idea of the painting Lilly can't leave and the counterspell is ingenious. I'm also glad that you've give Hermione some doubts about it all. I mean, a spell that invovles blood could be 'construed as dark magic'. I'm loving it. Keep updating please. You've got a brillant plot going here.
I'm with Hermione ... what's going to go wrong?? And brewing a potion - Snape has got to find out about this. And what is he going to think? I do hope Lily comes to like Harry, though. Poor kid. He's had it pretty rough. Okay, defintiely looking forward to an update! :-) Thanks for writing. Best, Sophie
I continue to love it. Your fic is like a subversive, feminist version of the Harry Potter books. Maybe not feminist, but subversive, definitely. Showing all the dark edges around the semingly fairy-tale Hogwarts. Even canon, which definitely shows the darker side of the wizarding world in general, upholds Hogwarts to be everything that's good. But H and L's discussion of the school from the perspective of Muggleborns suggests otherwise. Very interesting work.
Author's Response: I am just a subversive at heart. Obviously, I love the HP books, but there are things there I'm very uncomfortable with. My biggest problem is with the Slytherins. How can anyone justify labelling a group of eleven year old children as evil? And if they are evil, why are they allowed to be at Hogwarts? Is ambition evil? Is cunning evil? So they believe the end justifies the means. Obviously the Gryffindors agree with them, but because the Gryffindors are "good," it's OK. I really wonder how it's all going to play out. I realize that JKR is writing children's books, and that she wants to clearly delineate the good and the bad, but if you can dismiss a whole group of children as "bad," then you're taking your young readers into a false and harmful world view. I'll shut up, and just let you read the rest.
No I won't. There are a lot of things about Hogwarts that bother me. It seems to me that the wizarding world doesn't do very well with its less talented children. Lots of them are obviously bullied and ignored. And what about the Squibs? Are they all despised manual laborers like Filch? It annoyed me in OOTP, when he turned out to be bad. If you've ever read the wonderful Filch stories by Ozma, you'll agree with me that she had a far more humane view of a Squib's life. If you haven't, you're in for a treat.
Classic lines: "Really," sniffed Padma Patil, "you'd think they were the only houses in Hogwarts! It's always about them!" "Indeed," agreed Terry Boot, "I predict that the unending psychodrama of that rivalry will ultimately bring down the British wizarding world. It's high time the Ministry stepped in." Then, remembering the last time the Ministry had stepped in at Hogwarts, he groaned in despair, head in his hands." Was laughing my head off at that! And wow, Lily was quite a bit different than I expected! Good for her, indepenent woman! :-) Though I'd think she would have heard of Voldemort as he was already rising when they were in school, wasn't he? Hmm, I guess there's no canon proof of when exactly he started to become well known. I assumed it was in the mid-1970s because Bellatrix, Lucius, and the older crew of death eaters were just getting out of school then (and Severus was supposed to be a bit younger.) But I don't know for sure, which means that you've just suffered through a rambling, long-winded review. Okay, get to the point, Sophie: great chapter. Off to read more.
Wonderful first chapter. You've done a lovely job setting the scene!
I love this story. What an interesting idea for a plot. Lilly who isn't smitten with James Potter. Very very good. Please update soon!
This is the most interesting story involving Lily Evans that I've yet read. Please do continue it- it's so refreshing to see another bright, brash female who thinks outside the boundaries set by the wizarding world. The depiction of Dumbledore and the stultified learning at Hogwarts is also interesting. And what, WHAT was Lily researching? Did Dumbledore marry her off to stop her? Please do update soon.
Author's Response: Sorry I have not responded sooner. You brought up an interesting issue, and one that I had not explicitly dealt with: Did Dumbledore marry Lily off? The story doesn't exactly answer that, but you might see hints about why Dumbledore might prefer domestic bliss for her instead of public controversy. Thank you for your review!
I love the image of Lily given here: not just wife and mother, but independent and with her own plans and agenda. I've always thought Hermione sounded much like a younger Lily (although Ginny probably looks more like her.) I'm looking forward to the next chapter.
Nice to see Hermione finally have a a Muggleborn girl her age for a close friend. I like the way Lily reacts to hearing that her other self married James Potter, although I don't think she'd have married Lupin either - as a Prefect, Lupin didn't stop the Marauders from harassing Severus. Thanks for the chapter!
I'm looking forward to seeing where your headed with this. I liked the first chapter.
This is a very interesting and great start! can't wait to see what Sev's full reaction to seeing Lily will be and where the room came from! Can't wait for more!!
Wow, what a great first chapter!! So is this the first time Lily's portrait has ever had visitors? It'll be fun seeing who you have Lily chat with.
