You definitely need to credit Tim O'Brian in this.

Author's Response: I looked into that, actually. He doesn't own the title. "The Things They Carry" cannot be copyrighted because it's too common of a phrase. And I used nothing of his in the story itself, so.

Oh, Wow!! I really like this a lot!! I've been sitting here at my pc listening to my Itunes playlist. As I started reading this "Dance, Magic, Dance" by David Bowie from the movie Labyrinth came on and about half way through "Back to Avalon" by Kenny Loggins came on. It's kinda like (at least to me) that this was supposed to be read while listening to those songs, because it almost seemed to fit just right. I had goose bumps all the way through but toward the end they were worse. No, I'm not crazy, just strange (lol). If you get the opportunity to listen to those two songs try to do so and read this at the same time, it was really cool. This was a Bloody Brilliant story. Keep up the Absolutely Awesome work. Sleepy

Author's Response: Aww, thank you! I haven't heard those songs, but if I get a chance I'll definitely look into them. I'm glad you liked it. :)

Given that this story was obviously inspired by Tim O'Brian's book "The Things They Carried", I suggest you include that in the author's note.

Author's Response: Thanks, I don't mind doing that to be safe, but actually, this story was written before I'd even heard of Tim O'Brien's novel. It used to be, "the things they held" instead of "carried," then my professor introduced us to the book and I thought "carried" worked better. The story itself was not inspired in any way, shape, or form by O'Brien's Vietnam novel, though. Just FYI. :) I haven't even gotten half-way through it yet, and this fic's been posted on other sites for numerous months. I think sometimes it's perfectly possible for two writers to use the same phrase.
