I entirely agree with your assessment of Snape's death and this was a very good epilogue to his life story. It's really a shame that Ms. Rowling decided to basicaly clear out all of the "old guard" right at the end of DH, but there you have it.
*claps* This is really good, very well written and it brings good closure to Snape's story. He was a hero, definitely not a coward and I wish he could have survived and thereby live to see all the good he's done. There was so much more to him than just being a greasy over-grown bat :D
Author's Response: Snape will be greatly missed by all. Would it have killed Jo to have him 'missing' at the end of the battle? Oh well, now we can have our way with him.
Cathy, this brings a better close to Snape's story than DH. Kudos! I don't think JKR gives Snape enough credit. Granted, he was a bullying git at times, but considering his upbringing, I think he had farther to come than most of the other heroes in Harry Potter, and deserved better. I have a line in Casting Off where Fawkes says to Dumbledore "You and I both know that the measure of a man is more than his strengths and weakness, but how he lives in spite of them..."
Author's Response: Rachael, I read Casting Off and loved it. Snape is one of my favorite characters because of his flaws--if that makes any sense. Up until DH when we were given CluelessPuppet!Snape, he was a well-written character. The way his story was left hanging was awful, but at least it gave fic writers something to work with.
I didn't imagine a romantic ending either since they have both gone too far for that to happen to my mind. Also, I quite agree with you in your belief that Severus was a true hero who got a bum rap.
A couple of things in your story really resonated with me as they were things I hadn't thought of (I think I'm due to reread HBP and DH; I've only managed to read each of them once although I've read the others many times.) The first was you mentioned the pain Severus experienced in his death and the "merciful" death he gave Dumbledore. You are so right. I hadn't thought of it. But even more, that Severus died in a place that had terrible memories for him...the Shrieking Shack. You gave me many things to think about from your story. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Author's Response: One of my friends who previewed it thought the ending had romantic overtones. I didn't see it either. Dying in a place where he was almost killed as a teenager and killed by the symbol of his House. Truly a crappy way to go.
