Incredible insight to Ron's character and the game of chess. Keep up the good work.
I could really Ron looking at the world like it were a chess board, nice.
Great story... One of the best one shots I've read. Very atmospheric - and the technique of interspersing the piece movements amongst the internal dialogue actually works really well.
I was a bit jarred by you making the pawn become a king in defiance of the rules of chess, particularly because you used the metaphor so well throughout. But that seems minor in view of the strength of the story. I loved how he pushed himself, and how you drew his motivations--to protect Harry, Hermione, and Ginny--to ensure they'd still be there in the decades to come. There are so few stories, even from those sympathetic to Ron, who bring out this side of him, and I really loved that.
Ron the chessplayer, the pawn that is really King, is a really insightful reflection of ROn in the books - he may not be the most coherent bloke, but he can say it through chess, and more importantly, he can do it, so he doesn't need to give long explanations. Thank you, very enjoyable.
This is such a great ORGINAL story. I love the way you have blended Ron's love of chess into a philosopy of being and achieving. WELL DONE! I also think that you have done a bang on job of keeping Ron in character. One of THE BEST Roncentric pieces I have read!
Ron is perhaps my favorite Weasley (although Arthur is a close second.) I've long thought him far more than the comic relief JKR has made him in canon, and allowed to happen on screen. It was so nice to read your story, and his quiet, almost-desperate determination to see that the pawn navigated the board to safety and a position of power.
I was almost sad to see that you had changed the standard rules of chess to make the pawn a king, even though I understand the reasoning. I had been hoping see Ron's comprehension of the broader possibilities the pawn's triumphant position, that the entire point was that once across the Rubicon, the pawn could be whatever the pawn chose. Nevertheless, with Ron's drive to be more than the poor youngest son of a prolific family, using the metaphor of a king makes sense. Please do not take this as a criticism... it's great that you made me think, and I enjoyed the story thoroughly.
i dont get it, what is it about? very good descriptive word choice though.
Excellent Story! I must admit, I know nothing of chess, but your description - how your turned the game into a metaphor for how his character has developed and continues to develop....wonderful! KUDOS
I love the subtle intelligence of Ron. JKR presents him as immature yet brilliant at chess. I am glad to see that in your story he has grown into his "brilliance" with stealth and maturity.
