Lucius' disconnect with reality is clear here. He almost has no concept that what he is doing is rape, or that the boys don't *care* what he wants. I can't even begin to imagine how scary it must have been to write this!

Author's Response: It was stressful writing, yes, but giving the viewpoints of all three, in turn, meant I could at least not have it unrelenting ahumanity, and allow the reader (and myself) to step back a bit for the worst parts. I think it's pretty clear Lucius regards his son as well as Harry as mere property, not even as pets that could be hurt or distressed. Then he writes the whole experience out of their lives with Obliviate, not out of any kindness, but for his convenience. (That's going to come back and bite him, in Goodwill, if I get it written!)

Playing editor again, there is another age reference at the very beginning: "At sixteen they were even more sensitive about privacy for cuddling." Lucius Malfoy is a truly awful person. He does not even seem to realize he is doing anything wrong, let alone *care*. Poor Harry!

Author's Response: Thank you, kind editor! (There don't seem to be any more, thank goodness.) This earlier-written Lucius turns out to be not much like the guy we've learned a lot more about in canon in the last book – just as well, really! But he is an example of absolute selfishness, a feeling that does seem to drive the Death Eaters; and yes, I made him almost totally lacking in empathy. A psychopath. I'll be putting the third story, Defiance, up later today; see what you make of him and Harry in that, where they are, however weirdly, allied.
