I *love* this. You get the characteristation really right, James is exactly as i pictured him here, avoiding the actual issue of what he's done and passing it off as a joke. I love his reaction to being compared to Snape too... Well done :)

Author's Response: I see James as self-righteous and unexamining rather than malicious. Unfortunately the smug can do quite as much damage as the cruel when once they've decided that someone "deserves it".

Wow! Good one! I don't know if I'd ever considered whether Remus had ever talked to either of the Dynamic Duo about their stunt later. Both characters stayed in character and I could really see this happening.

Author's Response: When Harry confronted Sirius and Remus about the incident, Sirius commented that Remus had spoken to them "sometimes". So, if not here, then for another incident... (Though I tend to think this would be one he couldn't keep quiet about.)

Very interesting! Why Wormtail turned is a question that puzzles me a lot, but he must have some resentment towards the others. What I really want to know though, is why did the Sorting Hat put him in Gryffindor? We've seen nothing but self-interest from him. Of course, he may well show a little more backbone in the future...

Author's Response: A lot of the Sorting Hats decisions seem odd, eg why are ambitious Percy and the cunning Weasley twins in Gryffindor instead of Slytherin? Why are Crabbe and Goyle in Slytherin instead of Hufflepuff? Why does Harry get to change the Hat's decision simply by asking? Perhaps the last question answers all the others. But if people can put in orders for the House they want to be sorted to, why are there so many Hufflepuffs?

I seem to remember JK saying that Remus' main failing is that he wants to be liked. I love the last two sentences as they really highlight this. The conversation about what makes magic 'dark' is brilliant; I love the fact that James finally seems to get what Remus is trying to tell him. We know that James did eventually grow up, I'd love to think this was the reason why!

Author's Response: James continued hexing Snape even into 7th year (and maybe beyond) but it's true that he saved Snape's life in 6th year so perhaps this - or a similar conversation - is what got him to that point.

Just wondering.... Would you consider a third chapter? Lupin's POV when Sirius comes back in Book 3 and whaps Severus' head against the ceiling and stairs of the Shrieking Shack while Lupin, Harry, and Hermione just watch? Multiple concussions for Severus could've caused brain damage and death, yet Lupin had no "backbone" even then - about 15 years after this chapter, while Lupin was DADA professor. Thanks for posting!

Author's Response: That's an interesting idea. I'm really much more of a Snapist and I've covered that scene from Snape's POV in a couple of fics but never thought of going into Lupin's head to see what he was thinking. A minor quibble though; Harry just watched, but canon makes no mention of Lupin or Hermione seeing what Sirius was doing. The passage seems to have been quite narrow. They had to go through single file. As Lupin was up ahead, sidling through attached to Peter and Ron, and Hermione was at the back, behind Sirius (who was very tall) and Harry, they might not have actually seen. Lupin was still culpable though. He really should have known better than to allocate the care of an unconscious man to a hate-filled bully half-crazy from 12 years in Azkaban and a year as a fugitive. Sirius could never have been trusted to look after Snape but at this point how much less so!

Author's Response: I might consider a third chapter set when Remus returns to the castle next morning and finds out that Snape has "let slip" his secret - perhaps during a confrontation between them.
