It is an interesting thought, that Tom Riddle would have hatched his own basilisk, instead of using one a thousand years old. (It makes more sense, especially if one wonders (as I did) how much food and exercise it would need over the centuries.)

Author's Response: That is an interesting take on the poem! Alternatively, the hatchling could be a new baby basilisk that has hatched well after the "original" basilisk was killed by Harry in the Chamber. The knowledge of a second basilisk on the Hogwarts grounds - heading toward the Chamber, no less - would certainly inspire great terror in Myrtle! I always like to leave a bit of unresolved suspense in my poems so the reader can provide his/her own interpretation of the events. Thanks for reviewing!
